Governing Mayor Michael Müller (SPD) was also present. The construction work was particularly demanding, it was said. The entire platform area could not be built in open construction, but was "mined under the protection of a 28,000 cubic meter frost body" - a construction technique using ground freezing to stabilise the soil.

Important underground station for tourists

Due to its proximity to cultural sites such as the State Opera, the Deutsches Historisches Musem and the Humboldtforum, the underground station is particularly important for Berlin's tourism. Together with the stations "Rotes Rathaus" and "Unter den Linden", the new line 5 will close the gap between Alexanderplatz and the Brandenburg Gate. The station on Museum Island is expected to open in the summer of 2021.
