"Now also after eight", announced Berlin's famous KaDeWe department store: Parts of the Kaufhaus des Westens are now open until midnight.
According to the department store, some restaurants on the legendary gourmet floor, which is currently being modernised and marketed as "The Sixth" ("6th"), are now open until midnight. These include a champagne bar, a steak restaurant, a Austrian restauran and a restaurant in the style of a southern German restaurant ("Schwemme"). Visitors have access via a night entrance after the rest of the department store closes at 8 p.m.
KaDeWe is being renovated
The new owners are rebuilding the luxury department store in order to respond to changed shopping habits. The former legendary gourmet floor with many so-called "food stands" had long stood still in the brown and warm West Berlin 80s chic. The new design focuses a lot on white and a cool, hip atmosphere. The KaDeWe used to belong to Karstadt and is now owned by the Thai trading group Central Group and the Austrian Signa Group - as well as the Alsterhaus in Hamburg and the department store Oberpollinger in Munich.
