With a delay of nine years, the new Willy Brandt Airport (BER) is scheduled to open on 31 October 2020. This was announced by the operators on Friday, 29 November 2019.
Previously, airport CEO Engelbert Lütke Daldrup had informed the Supervisory Board of the opening date. He plans to explain more at a press conference in the late afternoon. The new airport is located in Schönefeld in the state of Brandenburg. It had already been known before the meeting that the BER would open on one day in October - nine years later than originally planned. Again and again, the opening date had been postponed due to severe construction defects.
Airports Tegel and Schönefeld will close
After the opening, the airlines will move from the old Tegel and Schoenefeld airports to the new buildings in several stages. In Tegel, operations will then be discontinued. However, planes will continue to take off from the old terminal in Schönefeld for several years to relieve pressure on the BER until additional capacities are created.
