Berlin's Christmas markets are open

With the opening of the large traditional Berlin Christmas markets on Monday, 25 November 2019 a festive atmosphere fills the city centre.

At the Gedächtniskirche, for example, around 150 decorated stands and a 20-metre-high Christmas tree with thousands of red and golden balls attract visitors. The governing mayor Michael Müller (SPD) is expected to attend the official opening (25 November 2019, 5 p.m.), after which the festive lighting will be switched on.

Christmas markets for every taste

The Christmas market at the Rotes Rathaus offers an ice rink for skaters at the Neptunbrunnen. It has a more traditional layout, with old Berlin backdrops from the 19th century. Right next door at the Christmas market at Alexanderplatz, visitors can meet for grilled bratwurst and mulled wine under an oversized Christmas pyramid.

Markets at Gendarmenmarkt and Charlottenburg Palace

The Christmas market at Gendarmenmarkt between the two cathedrals is also popular. Also at Charlottenburg Palace one of the most famous Christmas markets of the capital opens on Monday - after this had almost failed due to concerns about the security concept. The surroundings of the castle are transformed into a romantic winter village landscape.
