The ICC Berlin is now a listed building

As of the beginning of September, the International Congress Centrum Berlin is a listed building. It was closed in 2014 in order to remobe asbestos.

The monumental building in Berlin Charlottenburg has been awarded the title by the Landesdenkmalamt. Built in the 1970s according to plans by Ralf Schüler and Ursulina Schüler-Witte, the ICC is still regarded today as a prototype of a modern conference centre.
The future of this building has been discussed for years. The Berlin Senate wants to preserve the ICC as a congress and cultural centre. A comprehensive renovation is necessary. This will not be easy: the rooms are considered too small, the operating costs are too high and asbestos was also used in the construction.
The renovation of the huge building is to begin this year together with investors. 13 interested parties and potential investors have submitted ideas for future use. Whoever wins the competition is still open, but thanks to the now existing monument protection, the ICC can be preserved as a complete work.
