Berlin has reiterated its willingness to help migrants from the rescue vessel «Sea-Watch 3», which is based in Italy.

People board the rescue ship "Sea-Watch 3" after mooring in the port of Lampedusa Island.

«In principle, we want to accept refugees rescued at sea in Berlin», Integration Senator Elke Breitenbach (Die Linke) told the «Tagesspiegel» (2 July 2019). But for now it is the turn of the federal government to become active here.
Only recently, Berlin had taken in some refugees from Nigeria and Ghana who had been rescued in the Mediterranean Sea in April from distress at sea. The capital is a member of the local «Alliance for Safe Harbours», whose members have agreed to accept additional Mediterranean refugees. Berlin's Governing Mayor Michael Müller (SPD) recently described it as a «humanitarian and historical duty» to help refugees.
