Daniel Barenboim extends contract at Staatsoper

The conductor Daniel Barenboim (76) is to remain general music director of the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden until 2027. His contract, which currently runs until 31 July 2022, will be extended for a further five years.

The contract extension was announced by Daniel Barenboim and Senator for Culture Klaus Lederer on Tuesday, 4 June 2019 in Berlin. Barenboim has headed the Staatsoper since 1992. The opera's orchestra, the Staatskapelle Berlin, had already appointed him chief conductor for life.

The Argentinian-Israeli musician is regarded as one of the most famous classical artists in the world. After working in London, Paris and Chicago, he became director of the Staatsoper after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1992. Barenboim said on Tuesday that he was very pleased with the continuation of the collaboration.
