The first closures for the Carnival of Cultures will occur on Thursday, 6 June 2019. From Thursday morning until Tuesday morning (11 June), the bus lines M41, 248, N1 and N42 will be diverted or shortened. Due to the street parade on 9 June, there will be restrictions on lines M19, M29, 140, 171, 194 and 248. The diverted line M41 will then offer an additional connection to the festival grounds through the Wilmsstraße stop.
The M29 line is diverted via Potsdamer Straße - Potsdamer Platz - Stresemannstraße. The day before, line 140 will be temporarily diverted in the afternoon. The reason for this is the move to the Children's Carnival of Cultures, which takes place on Saturday. For the same reason, the M29 line ends at Oranienplatz from around 1.30 pm to 3 pm.
U-Bahn trains run longer and more frequently
To compensate for the closures, the BVG is stepping up its underground services: on Friday and Saturday, the U1 and U3 trains run every 5 minutes until 0:30 a.m., and in the night from Sunday to Monday even until 2 a.m. every night. On the U6, trains run until 2 a.m. on all festival days. The U6 also runs every 5 minutes on Sunday between Tempelhof and Kurt-Schumacher-Platz stations between 9 a.m. and 0:30 a.m.
The U7 runs every five minutes from 9 a.m. to 0:30 a.m. between Fehrbelliner Platz and Grenzallee stations. On both lines, trains run the longest possible length until 2 a.m. In addition, there is of course a continuous night service from Whitsunday to Whit Monday on all underground lines except U4 and U55. In total, the trains run from Friday morning to Monday night without a break.
For four days around Pentecost, Berlin celebrates its cultural diversity at the Carnival of Cultures. The festival culminates in a colourful street parade with music and dance on Pentecost Sunday.
