The guidelines for Berlin horse-drawn carriages have been amended accordingly, the administration of justice announced on Monday, 13 May 2019. From now on every horse is also entitled to two hours of free movement on unpaved ground every day outside the working hours. "Carriage rides in a metropolis of millions mean enormous stress for the horses. For the sake of animal protection, it is therefore necessary to make clear specifications in terms of animal welfare," emphasised Senator Dirk Behrendt (Greens).

Petition of animal rights activists fails

Carriage rides are popular with tourists. They are offered at Brandenburg Gate. For a long time there has been a dispute between animal rights activists and operators about the Berlin carriages. The senate failed to achieve a general ban in the city.
