Berliners asked to water trees

Due to the continuing drought, the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district has called on its citizens to help water street trees and young greenery.

The Grünflächenamt alone is not capable of doing this with its limited personnel, said city councillor Florian Schmidt on Wednesday (24 April 2019). "The newly planted trees and other plants on the roadside need a particularly large amount of water," he added. A second dry spell after the summer of 2018 would not be well tolerated either by young plants or the old stock of trees.

Two to three buckets of water per tree

If possible, a tree should currently receive at least two to three buckets of water per day. There are about 42,000 trees in the district. In Berlin it has hardly rained in April so far. Often no more than one to two litres per square metre fell, sometimes even less. According to meteorologists at Freie Universität, about 42 liters per square meter are normal for April.
