153,053 women and men were unemployed, 2785 fewer than in January, according to the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit) on Friday. The unemployment rate fell to 7.9 percent, 0.8 percentage points lower than a year ago. "In Berlin and Brandenburg, the job market remains robust," said Bernd Becking, head of the Berlin agency. Especially the long-term unemployed profited.

Berlin still is one of the federal states with the highest unemployment rate

However, more than 50,000 new jobs subject to social insurance contributions were created in the city in 2018. Although the increase of around 53,000 was about one tenth below the two previous years, it is still more than twice the national average. At the same time, fewer new residents moved to the city in 2018.
