Less registered crimes in Berlin

The number of officially registered crimes in Berlin has fallen slightly for the third time in a row. Last year, the police recorded 511 677 crimes.

That was 8760 fewer than in 2017, as Senator for internal affairs Andreas Geisel (SPD) said on 27 February 2019. Above all, there were again fewer burglaries and pickpockets because the police continued their intensive countermeasures. At the same time, the number of attacks on police officers increased, as did cybercrime.

Crime statistics only show registered crimes

Murders, robberies, burglaries and car thefts are recorded statistically to a very large extent because almost all victims report to the police. The vast majority of drug offences, shoplifting and insults, on the other hand, are hardly registered. Also many bodily injuries, sexual harassment and cases of sexual abuse of children are not discovered and therefore do not appear in any statistics. Crime statistics are therefore only meaningful in certain fields.
