In Berlin, just over two million people were in work in 2018. This number exceeded the two million mark for the first time since German reunification.
More and more people are employed in Berlin. Population growth alone cannot explain the increase. Compared to 1991, 17.6 percent more employees are registered with a simultaneous population growth of about five percent. The unemployment rate in Berlin has also fallen. In October 2018, the Berlin-Brandenburg Office for Statistics announced a record low at 7.7 percent, the number of unemployed citizens fell below 150,000 for the first time since German reunification in 1990.
