3600 Britons apply for residency title because of Brexit

Since the beginning of the year, thousands of Britons living in Berlin have submitted an application for a residency title to the Foreigners Registration Office.

Since the activation of the online registration at the Foreigners Authority on 3 January 2019, about 3600 people have registered, as the Foreigners Registration Office announced on Tuesday (15 January 2019) in response to a request by German news agency dpa. A total of 18,000 Britons potentially affected by Brexit live in Berlin.

Britons need residence permit after Brexit

If Brexit happens at the end of March, British citizens will need a residence permit or proof of their right of residence for their stay in Germany from that point onward. The British Parliament will vote on the Brexit agreement negotiated by May's government with Brussels on Tuesday evening.
