The "Berliner Mauerweg" follows the former Inner German border surrounding West Berlin.

In addition, an improvement of the information system along the historical route is planned, as Environment Senator Regine Günther (non-partisan/for the Greens) announced on Tuesday (8 January 2019) following a corresponding Senate decision. She estimated the costs at 12.4 million euros. Planning for the extension is to begin this year. Construction is estimated to take around five years.
