Green light for new public holiday in Berlin

It's official: The Berlin House of Representatives has cleared the way for an additional public holiday in the German capital. On 24 January 2019, a majority of representatives voted in favour of International Women's Day on 8 March.

The Left Party, the SPD and also the Green faction in the Berlin House of Representatives voted in favour of making International Women's Day on 8 March a public holiday in the German capital. Delegates of CDU, AfD and FDP voted against it. Berlin is one of the federal states with relatively few public holidays. Currently there are nine whereas in Bavaria there are thirteen. The capital is the first federal state in Germany to declare International Women's Day a public holiday.
