At present more than 1000 roses bloom in the rose garden at Pfaueninsel and about 200 different historical varieties can be admired. Due to the weather, the rose blossom on the island in the river Havel is particularly pronounced this year. In contrast to the modern rose species, the historical roses exude a very intense floral scent.

A rose garden designed by Peter Joseph Lenné

The garden artist Peter Joseph Lenné (1789-1866) laid out the rose garden on Pfaueninsel (Peacock Island) in 1821. It was the first of its kind in Prussia. In the 19th century, the garden with its labyrinthine paths was considered one of the most impressive in Europe.
