Report from Exile – Photographs by Fred Stein

The exhibition "Report from Exile" by the German-American Jewish photographer traces the artist's career path with around 160 portraits as well as press and street photographs.

The exhibition "Report from Exile - Photographs by Fred Stein" shows Stein's works in their political-historical context for the first time. It will be on view in the Pei Building until 20 June 2021 after the reopening of the museum, which is currently closed due to the lockdown. Those interested can currently discover the exhibition digitally from home.

About the exhibition "Report from Exile - Photographs by Fred Stein"

Fred Stein's work is inextricably linked to German history. Having fled Germany in 1933, the trained lawyer took up the profession of photographer. In Paris and New York, he portrayed well-known personalities of the literary and political exile: authors and publicists, journalists and intellectuals, most of them persecuted as Jews and opponents of National Socialism like him. In the exhibition, the museum shows his portraits and city views from the 1930s to the 1960s for the first time in the context in which Stein took his photographs - for example, at the International Writers' Congress in Defence of Culture in 1935 or in the environment of the Protective Association of German Writers Abroad.

The exhibition at the Deutsches Historisches Museum (German Historical Museum) shows Stein's professional path from talented autodidact to important chronicler and portraitist of German-speaking emigrants and exiles. Among others, Hannah Arendt, Willy Brandt, Bertolt Brecht, Lion Feuchtwanger, Klaus Mann and Anna Seghers are on display.
