No matter whether you love it or loathe it, Valentine's Day is coming up. In 2023, February 14 falls on a Tuesday. Most of us know Valentine's Day as a trend that arrived from the United States and involves exchanging cards, bouquets of flowers and gifts. While the tradition only arrived in Germany relatively recently, many Berliners like to celebrate the Day of Love with their significant other, use the occasion to finally ask that special someone out on a date, or show their love to family and friends.

History of Valentine's Day: The Myth of Bishop Valentine of Terni

According to Christian tradition, Valentine's Day takes its name from Bishop Valentine of Terni from Rome. He defied the will of the emperor in times of war, secretly married couples and had to die a martyr's death for it on February 14, 268. Through his deeds, the connection between Valentine's Day and love is said to have arisen. In its current form, the day of lovers, on which couples exchange small gifts as a sign of their love, has only existed in Germany since the early 1950s. The most common gifts are still flowers, but now also chocolates, Valentine's cards, perfumes and jewelry.
