On Christopher Street Day, hundreds of thousands of people take to the streets to fight for the rights of LGBTQ+ people with a great parade, colourful floats and lots of music.
Around one million people usually take part in the Christopher Street Day parade. CSD commemorates the first known uprising by LGBT people against police brutality in New York's Christopher Street in Greenwich Village on 27 June 1969 in the Stonewall Inn gay bar. This was followed by days of street battles between bargoers, protesters and the police.
The first "Christopher Street Day" in Berlin took place on June 30, 1979 - "Gay Pride" was the motto under which 450 demonstrators took to the streets in West Berlin. The atmosphere on the streets was exuberant and cheerful. There was no hostility or even violence against participants - a decisive difference to earlier events.
