The United Buddy Bears is an initiative of the prominent Berlin businessman, Klaus Herlitz. In 2002, the first circle of 125 United Buddy Bears by artists from all over the world was set up on the grounds of the future American Embassy next to the Brandenburg Gate. The positive reaction to the circle of Buddy Bears was so great that a new circle was opened in July, 2003 by UNICEF Ambassador Sir Peter Ustinov. Artists from the countries of the United Nations were invited to create a Berlin Buddy Bear on behalf of their country. The circle of "Tolerance and Understanding Among the Peoples of the World" went on tour to other major cities and was finally auctioned off with proceeds going to UNICEF.
