On June 25, 1995, after a long debate, the German Bundestag passed a resolution establishing a "Monument to the Murdered Jews of Europe" at the very centre of Berlin. The monument acts as the central site of remembrance and commemoration of the victims of the Holocaust. The monument’s design by New York architect Peter Eisenman represents a radical confrontation with the traditional concept of a monument, among other things because it does without any symbolism. Since its opening on May 12, 2005, the field of concrete pillars is accessible free of charge day and night. The underground Information Centre is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 8pm (last entrance at 7:15pm).
