Allotment Gardens

History of the Berlin Allotment-Garden System

The allotment-garden system began during the 19th Century, in the context of industrialization and the rapid growth of commercial and industrial cities. The allotment gardens were designed to improve the self-sufficiency and the health conditions of the lower population strata.

Not until the promulgation of the Allotment Garden and Small-Lease-Holding Ordinance of July 31, 1919 was legal protection for non-commercially used property such as the “Schreber” gardens, workers' gardens etc., provided.
