In 1792, in a little-explored part of the Tiergarten, J. H. Sello created the so-called Neue Partie near today's Große Sternallee. One of the waterways that drained the forest here was expanded to form a charming elongated lake with several islands and a jagged shoreline. This was the first park in the Großer Tiergarten to be designed in the scenic style.
One of the islands was dedicated to the French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712–1778), who in the time before the French Revolution was one of the major exponents of the Enlightenment. With the help of a donation made at the city's anniversary in 1987, it was possible to replace the lost original monument with a new memorial stone.
