Situated initially on the outskirts of the city, then later, as the city grew, in its centre, the "Großer Tiergarten Berlin" park has always been of the utmost importance for the recreation of Berliners. Besides the traditional walking, boating, camping and peaceful observation of nature, every conceivable form of leisure and sport is practised here today.
The special ecological significance of the park is due on the one hand to its climate-influencing function of inner city ventilation and temperature equalisation, and on the other hand to its use as an urban habitat for wild plants and animals.
With about 1,400 species, of which over 100 are on the red list of endangered species in Berlin, the Großer Tiergarten is an urban treasure trove of biodiversity. The nightingales were always legendary in the Tiergarten. The old trees must be treated with special care, particularly those predating the Second World War.
