A top European destination – ranked third after London and Paris

Berlin’s popularity continues to grow apace. Today’s Berlin attracts 13.5 million visitors to its hotels and guest houses and belongs to the exclusive league of cities with 33 million overnight stays a year. Through our comprehensive marketing activities, we ensure that Berlin remains one of the top city break destinations.

Tourism is a key sector in Berlin

Tourism secures jobs for 240,000 people in Berlin and generates sales of at least 10.6 billion euros.

This world city which “does not cost the world” is renowned for its vast diversity – a unique Berlin mix of culture, history, relaxation and lifestyle.

Berlin has one of Europe’s most modern hotel landscapes (with over 130,000 beds). Moreover, the new hotels now in planning underline the sector’s belief in the city’s development as a tourism location.

Retail trade in Berlin also benefits from tourism, with tourists accounting for 40% of sales in main shopping areas and malls. The retail sector share of sales generated by tourism amounts to four billion euros.

Tourism also has an overall positive effect indirectly on the city as an economic location, since it helps to spread an image of Berlin as dynamic with a high quality of life around the globe. This gives the city an edge in attracting both new enterprises and highly qualified specialists and skilled workers.

Berlin has also built on its successes in the key sector of conventions and meetings, and is now third in the global rankings of international conventions. The congress sector generates twenty-five per cent of all hotel overnight stays.
