Berlin and Warsaw’s agreement on friendship and cooperation and a corresponding supporting program was signed in Berlin on 12 August 1991. This was followed on 7 January 1994 by the signing of a “framework agreement on mutual cooperation between Berlin and Warsaw” on continuing the cooperative partnership that had existed since August 1991.
Over the following years, the two cities established close contacts between their city administrations and in the areas of urban development, traffic and transportation, renovating prefabricated housing estates, environmental protection, and especially cultural exchange.
The cooperation between the two partners includes helping each other with international congresses, conferences, and other events, which are being used more and more to share experience, and their work together as two EU capitals. Other priorities include school partnerships - we maintain around 70 partnerships with schools and universities in Warsaw or other Polish cities - and sports events that bring young athletes from both cities together.
A good and reliable network of reciprocal contacts has been built up over time. Along with our direct contacts to Warsaw’s city administration, partners like the Polish Institute in Berlin, the Goethe-Institut in Warsaw, and the embassies of both countries are indispensable when it comes to carrying out specific projects.
Poland is our direct neighbor. In view of the eventful history we share, Berlin attaches great importance to the partnership with Warsaw and other Polish cities. This emphasis was also expressed in the program organized by both cities in 2011 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their partnership.
