Berlin has been a member of “Mayors for Peace” since 1989. The idea behind the organization is to take a stand and work together in campaigning for a world without nuclear weapons. The organization’s German office is based in Hanover.
Berlin has taken part in “Flag Day” (July 8) a number of times and has raised the “Mayors for Peace” flag in prominent locations. This gesture is intended to remind people of the advisory opinion delivered by the International Court of Justice on 8 July 1996, which determined that there is an international legal obligation to pursue negotiations leading to complete nuclear disarmament.
Along with the Governing Mayor of Berlin, almost all of Berlin’s boroughs have joined the network and have held a joint Mayors for Peace flag-raising ceremony since 2018.
