The European Coalition of Cities against Racism (ECCAR) has its origins in an initiative launched by UNESCO and was established in 2004. Berlin joined in 2006 when it signed the coalition’s 10-point action plan against racism. Represented by the Berlin State Office for Equal Treatment and against Discrimination (LADS), which is part of the Senate Department for Justice, Consumer Protection and Anti-Discrimination, Berlin has been one of nine members of the ECCAR steering committee since 2011. This committee meets several times a year to discuss measures and strategies against racism, as well as current developments in European cities.
