With 110, 000 drawings, watercolours, pastels and oils sketches, Berlin’s Kupferstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Drawings) reputedly holds one of the world’s most complete collections of illuminated manuscripts and the art of paper illustration. As one of the most important graphic art museums in the world it spans an astounding array of 1,000 years of art, culture and media history ranging from high Middle-Ages’ codices – the codex was the first modern form of book to replace scrolls - to contemporary art.
The carefully protected exhibits in special glass casings include 14th century masterpieces such as hand illustrated books and manuscripts from the great masters such as Dürer, through Rembrandt, Schinkel and Picasso.
Highlights include Adolph Menzel’s drawings, prints originating from many ages and schools – modern and contemporary art is represented with Munch, Kirchner, Picasso and Giacometti as well as US Pop art.
