Berlin Wall History Mile at the Heinrich-Heine-Strasse border crossing

The memorial crosses put up for Klaus Brüske and Heinz Schöneberger, who were killed by border guards at the Heinrich-Heine-Strasse checkpoint, have long since disappeared. The Berlin Wall History Mile info board (on the western side of Heinrich-Heine-Strasse, near Sebastianstrasse) describes the escape attempts of the two men, who in 1962 and 1965 tried to reach West Berlin.

Following Sebastianstrasse east will take you along the line marking the former course of the Wall, into Luckauer Strasse and then Waldemarstrasse. The line crosses what was once the Luisenstädtischer Kanal, part of the border fortifications until 1989. Two more stops along the Berlin Wall History Mile can be found at the corner of Leuschnerdamm and Waldemarstrasse and on Engeldamm near Melchiorstrasse. The info boards there describe everyday life in West Berlin in the shadow of the Wall and life along the border in East Berlin.
