After around four years of work, the restoration and modernisation of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin was completed as scheduled in agreement between the Federal State of Berlin and Walter Bau AG. Between July 31 and August 1 2004, the stadium was officially opened to the public with a special show. The cost of renovation ran to around 240 million euros. The newly finished stadium now features a high-tech, multifunction roof and offers seating for about 75,000 spectators.

Being a historically conserved site, only very careful interventions were carried out on the original appearance and construction of the Olympic Stadium. The restoration and modernisation mean Berlin gains not just a top class sports venue - especially for national and international football - but also a popular location for larger events and concerts. Work began in July 2000 and continued without interrupting regular game schedules, with a capacity for 55,000 seats for the German Football League. Between July 31 and August 1 2004, the stadium’s grand opening was commemorated with a special show.

A visitors’ information centre near the construction site details the history of the stadium, the reconstruction concept and progress of the work. The exhibition is located in the German Sports Forum on the Olympic Grounds (entrance Hanns-Braun-Straße). The Olympic Stadium was designed by Architect Werner March for the Olympic Games 1936. Besides the stadium, the Olympic Grounds boast an overall 131 hectares with swimming stadium, hockey stadium and an open-air theatre – today’s Waldbühne (Forest Stage). At the same time, the entire site is also a milestone of contemporary sports facilities architecture.

Today one could not imagine sports and cultural life in the city without these sports facilities, which date back to 1936. Berlin’s Hertha BSC play their home games here, elite international track and field athletes appear here annually at the Internationales Stadionfest ISTAF, and international athletics competitions take place here, like the IAAF World Championships in Athletics from August 15 to 23, 2009. Rounding out the program is a multitude of concerts showing here – rock, pop and classic.
