A hundred years ago archaeologist found the bust of the ancient Egyptian Queen Nefertiti in Tell el-Amarna, also known as the Egyptian city Akhetaton. To remind the finding date the exhibition shows never-before-seen discoveries from several museums throughout the world. They put Nefertiti's era in a cultural-historical context which provides a proper understanding of this ancient time.
The exhibition places the discovery of the bust of Nefertiti within the context of Borchardt's excavations in 1912 and 1913. It illuminates the discovery of the bust of Nefertiti in the sculpture workshop of ancient Egyptian artisan Thutmose. Even though the exhibition focuses on archaeology, it also critically examines the history of the depiction of the bust of Nefertiti both as an archaeological object and as a widely marketed ideal of beauty.
Different from previous exhibitions about Nefertiti this one offers a comprehensive overview of life during a fascinating period. Besides some famous key objects it shows loans from collections of the Berlin museums, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Louvre and the British Museum. All in all about 400 objects allow vsitors to get a deep and vivid understanding of the city of Amarna, its buildings and residents.
