Quality of life in an urban environment
Berlin’s historic city center is located east of Pariser Platz and Brandenburg Gate around the avenue Unter den Linden, and extends across Gendarmenmarkt to the waterfront areas of the Nicolaiviertel and the Fischerinsel. The western city center is concentrated around the boulevard Kurfürstendamm, the Gedächtniskirche (Memorial Church), and Tauentzienstrasse. There are also a number of borough “centers”; these all have a character of their own and play a major role in the way Berliners identify with their neighborhoods. An entirely new shopping, cultural, and residential quarter has emerged at Potsdamer Platz. This is an excellent place to begin a stroll through the government, parliament, and embassy district, past the Reichstag building, and up to elegant Friedrichstrasse. Renowned architects like Josef Paul Kleihues, Hans Kollhoff, Renzo Piano, Aldo Rossi, Helmut Jahn, and Norman Foster have all left their mark on the new buildings throughout this area.

Quality of life in the city
Berlin unites urban density with high quality of life. The local public transportation network is modern and extensive, and is run by the companies Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe and S-Bahn Berlin GmbH. Recent years have seen an increase in the availability of both reasonably priced and high-end housing in Berlin. The rivers and many lakes not only make it possible to swim and fish within the city limits, but also help to make Berlin the only large German city able to meet its drinking water needs with its own groundwater supply.

Life in a major metropolitan area
For lots of Berliners with children, the heart of the city is an ideal place to live. This central location, its schools and shops, and its excellent transportation system are an unbeatable combination for many people.
The federal state of Berlin supports this choice with many different playgrounds, green spaces, and places where children and teenagers can play sports, especially in areas undergoing urban renewal. The
„Social City“
program continues to boost development in several city neighborhoods.
