Berlin has more than 170 museums, 22 of which belong to the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation financed jointly by Germany’s federal and state governments. One historical location is Museum Island, on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1999. The Pergamon Museum and the Old Museum (Altes Museum), two places especially popular with the public, are also located here. Other state-owned museums are clustered around Charlottenburg Palace (Schloss Charlottenburg); additional locations include the museum complex in Dahlem and the Kulturforum in Berlin’s Tiergarten district. The number of visitors has more than doubled since 1994.
Our museum guide has information on all of the city’s museums. The approximately 300 privately and publicly owned galleries also attract art lovers.
Culture, nature, and history unite in the parks of the Foundation for Prussian Palaces and Gardens (Stiftung Preussische Schlösser und Gärten) Berlin-Brandenburg, which owns 150 historic buildings and palaces. These include Charlottenburg Palace, Peacock Island (Pfaueninsel), and the hunting lodge Jagdschloss Grunewald, among others, in Berlin and the palace and gardens of Sanssouci in Potsdam, including the New Palace (Neues Palais) and Cecilienhof Palace.
Many different memorial sites, educational facilities, and exhibitions in Berlin deal with the subject of the National Socialist regime.
