Since the 6th century b. C. pre-Roman Iron Age settlements, documented by several archaeological finds in Königsheide (Johannisthal)
3000-1800 b. C. Neolithic hammer-axe found in Alt- Treptow
2000 b. C. Fireplaces in the area of the modern streets Germanen-, Preußen-, Alemannen- and Sachsenstraße (Altglienicke) discovered
6th and 7th centuries Slavic settlement in today’s Berlin area and construction of a castle on the castle island in Köpenick , birth of the round village Smekewitz (now Schmöckwitz)
10th February 1209 First mention of ”Copnic“, which obtained later the oldest town ordinances and privileges in Berlin’s area (after Berlin/Cölln and Spandau)
1245 The Ascanians take over the castle on the island and dismantled it
1355 First mention of the city neighbourhood Frauentog, a settlement of the castle
1375 First mention of Glinik, Bonistorp, Schmöckwitz and Rahnsdorf in so called “land book” of the emperor Charles IV.
1424 The first Hohenzollern prince Frederick I gives Cöpenick the right to be a market town.
1451 The Kietzer fishermen obtains ”eternal right to fish”
1478 A major fire destroys Köpenick
1527 First documented mention of a church in Bohnsdorf
1558 Elector Joachim II commissions the building of a Renaissance hunting lodge on the Cöpenicker castle island
1568 First mention of Trebow in a finance department’s book, documentation of the existence of a fisherman’s house
1618-1648 Destruction and plundering during the Thirty Years´ War
1680-1690 The Dutch master builder Rütger von Langerfeld builds a new baroque castle
1685 Settlement of Huguenots by the “Freiheit”
28th October 1730 In the Cöpenicker castle the Royal Court sentences Lieutenant von Katte, friend of the future king Frederick II, to death
1747-1753 Settlers´ villages are established in Friedrichshagen, Müggelheim and Grünau for immigrants (Bohemians and Palatines)
1832 Foundation of the laundry and dyeing factory by Wilhelm Spindler, who expands his activities in 1873 (the district’s name is now Spindlerfeld) and builds a housing estate for his workers
1835 The laundress, Henriette Lustig becomes the first person to gain permission for the foundation of a laundry (Alter Markt 4)
1841 Inauguration of the St. Laurentius Church in Cöpenick
23rd October 1842 Opening of the railway station Cöpenick, part of the Berlin- Frankfurt/Oder railway
1841-1876 Treptow becomes national property in 1841, administrative district in 1874 Prussian country community in 1876
Second half of the 19th century Industrial settlements in Treptow, railway in Görlitz Berlin in 1867, and the Berlin metro system, Ringbahn (1871)
1875-1887 Creation of the Treptower Park, designed by Gustav Meyer
1890 Period of industrialisation in both sides of the upper part of the Spree river
16th March 1898 Foundation of the autonomous country community, Oberschöneweide
1896/98 Large industrial exhibition, called the World Fair manqué in Treptow Park, construction of the Archenhold Observatory in Treptow Köpenick
1899 The first metro railway in Berlin is put into operation with the connection of Stralau and Treptow by the Spree tunnel
1901-1904 Erection of the town hall in Cöpenick in brick gothic style
16th October 1906 Cöpenickiade by the shoemaker Wilhelm Voigt (“The Captain of Köpenick”)
Since April 1901 Construction of the Teltow Canal, in summer 1907 increases boat commerce
1908/1909 Construction of the Archenhold Observatory
1909 The first German airport for engine powered airplanes is built between Johannisthal and Adlershof
26th October 1910 Inauguration of the town hall in Treptow (Neue Krugallee)
1914-1917 The architect Peter Behrens builds by order of AEG a large factory for the NAG (National Automobile Company) in Oberschöneweide
1st October 1920 With the Greater Berlin Act, Treptow and Köpenick become the 15th and 16th boroughs of Berlin. Their first borough mayors are Julius Grunow and Dr. Martin Franz, respectively
1931 January 1st Köpenick becomes written with “K”
1933 “Bloody Week Köpenick”, 21st June: opponents of the National socialist party are persecuted, tortured and killed
1938 The Greater Berlin Local Government Reform Bohnsdorf, which was previously administrated by Köpenick, is given to Treptow; Oberschöneweide, which belonged to Treptow, is given to Köpenick and the Britzer Wiesen of Neukölln is given to Treptow (Späthsfelde). Treptow has 118,159 inhabitants at this time, Köpenick has 120,446
1945 23rd April, The Red Army troops reach Köpenick
20th October 1946 First free local elections after 1929 take place, Fritz Bessen is elected mayor in Köpenick and Erwin Bennewitz in Treptow
1946/1949 Construction of the Soviet War Memorial in Treptow Park
1950 112,702 people live in Treptow, 119,083 in Köpenick
1952 Opening of the Pioneer Park, now called the recreation and youth centre FEZ in Wulheide
13rd August 1961 The Berlin Wall is built around the Western sectors of Berlin. Treptow has the longest border in the city and it is separated by the wall from its neighbouring boroughs, Kreuzberg and Neukölln
1970 132,132 people live in Treptow, 128,493 in Köpenick
6th May 1990 Second free local elections after 1929. Monika Höppner and Michael Brückner are elected mayor of Köpenick and mayor Treptow respectively
1990 Treptow has 102,295 inhabitants, Köpenick has 109,370
2nd December 1990 First joint election in Berlin for the House of Representatives
29th January 1991 Foundation of the Tourism Club in Köpenick, the Tourism Club in Köpenick-Treptow is a registered association in 1999
20th September 1991 Foundation of the Research and Development Company, Adlershof WiStA in 1995, (City for Science, Technology and Media Adlershof); today it is a world known technology Park with 23 university, scientific institutes, and research institutes, plus 353 societies
Since 1992 First joint major construction project after the reunification: In southern Treptow, in Altglienicke, 2,456 new buildings were erected.
1995 Construction in the Wuhlheide begins. After two years, the foundation stone for the industrial centre Manfred von Ardenne is laid down
1997 Roofing ceremony for the Spreeknie TGS Technology and Start-up Centre in Oberschöneweide
July 1998 First joint session of the borough offices of Treptow and Köpenick meets to prepare for the fusion of the two boroughs
10th October 1999 Treptow (34 members of the Borough Assembly) and Köpenick (35 members of the Borough Assembly) elect, for the last time, separate borough assemblies
12th October 2000 69 members of the Borough Assembly of both boroughs meet, for the first time, together. They elect in the ensuing meetings the first borough office of the new borough, the new mayor and five borough councillors. The first borough mayor of Berlin’s largest borough is the former mayor of Köpenick, Dr. Klaus Ulbricht
1st January 2001 The first borough office of the new borough starts. The whole borough has 231,002 inhabitants
21st October 2001 In all 12 boroughs of Berlin, 55 members of the Borough Assembly are elected for each borough (read more information under Borough Assembly)
7th October 2002 First section of the Eastern Tangential Connection (TVO) between An der Wühlheide and Oberspreestraße is traffic accessible under the name Spindlersfelder Straße, so that Köpenick could be unburdened from motorised traffic
29th November 2002 The newly arranged castle square in the Old Town Köpenick is reopened to the public
18th July 2003 The first farmers’ market takes place on the castle square. Every Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. fresh products from the region are sold.
27th May 2004 Reopening of the Köpenick Castle after thorough restoration work with the “Decorative arts from the Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo,” as a part of the Berlin Museum of Applied Arts
1st September 2005 Opening of the motorway section A 113n from the City Ring, (STADTRING) Berlin to Adlershof
7th October 2005 For the 100th anniversary of the town hall in Köpenick, the entry stairs and the former Council hall are restored true to the original colour.
7th September 2006 For the 100th anniversary of the Köpenickiade on the 16th October a special stamp “Captain of Köpenick” is issued
26th October 2006 After the Berlin election on 17th September, the Borough Assembly of Treptow-Köpenick elects the new borough office. The mayor Gabriele Schöttler is in the fore. She replaces Klaus Ulbricht, who after 14 years of work cannot be re-elected.
20th December 2006 The Groß-Berliner-Damm is extended from Johannisthal up to Adlershof. Now a new access road to the City of Science, Technology and Media is available, as well as new plots of land for industrial use
10th February 2009 Ceremonial Act to commemorate the foundation of Köpenick on 10th of February 1209. Köpenick celebrates its 800th anniversary with several events all year long.
