Fritz Lang (1890–1976)
Fritz Lang is widely recognised as one of the most important film directors of all time. While even the Nazis’ Minister of Propaganda, Goebbels, admired his works such as Metropolis (1926) and M (1931), Lang was not willing to subordinate himself to the Nazi regime. In 1934, he went into exile in the USA, where he co-founded the Hollywood Anti-Nazi League. He was unable, however, to match his earlier screen successes.
