Albert Einstein (1879–1955)

His theory of relativity made the charismatic physicist and Nobel laureate Albert Einstein world famous. A pacifist and an advocate for international dialogue, Einstein spoke out against anti-Semitism and promoted human rights. In 1932, he signed the “Urgent Call for Unity”, an appeal against the rising tide of Nazism issued by an alliance of left-wing organisations. He travelled to the United States in the same year and did not return in 1933. His works were burned publicly on 10 May 1933.
